With no relief in sight from the triple-digit temperatures, it’s hard to grasp that fall is just weeks ahead. Professional landscapers look for the signs of nature to know that a change is in the wind. Mike Draghici, owner of Texas Patio & Garden, looks for bee activity to signal a transition into fall.
“While you are outside, watch the honeybees. You’ll see them a lot right now around your flower beds and the trash cans at gas stations,” Mike said. “Once the bees go away, it’s time for fall preparation.”
Buzz Off
Wasps are also very active right now. As a realtor, I’ve been attacked by wasps entering a home during the summer. I always look for nests near doorways before entering a home.
“I recommend scanning for wasp nests around your property and doing the typical pest control service,” said Mike. “These insects sense fall is coming and start to find their shelter inside openings around your home. You don’t want them to spread in these areas and emerge in numbers during the spring.”
Watering Tips
To help your plants and trees survive the rest of the summer, Mike recommends taking a strategic watering approach.
“Give your plants just enough water at night to keep them happy, but try not to over water them,” Mike said. “Try also not to water at mid-day, especially if they are in full sun.”
September and October usually bring rain to South Texas. Mike says to prep now to maximize the benefits of that precious resource for your lawn and plants.
Plan for Rain
“Make sure that your gutters and drains are free from debris to keep the water flowing away from your house,” he added. “It’s also good to rake and remove the leaves on grass or flower beds. Also, add fresh mulch around trees and plant beds to help retain the moisture from watering and the rain.”
