Easy Steps Get Your Pool Ready for Swimming Season

Other popular type is the diatomaceous earth filter, sometimes referred to as a “DE filter.”

Spring is here, and that means it’s time to get the pool ready for swimming season. Whether you hire a pool maintenance service or do it yourself, here are some simple steps to get your pool swim-ready fast.

They come from Robert Poland, a 40-year pool maintenance expert in the San Antonio area. Robert says these tips can also help save you costly repairs in the future.

Clean Your Filter

Throughout the year, your filter can get dirty with plant debris and other items drifting into your pool. A clean filter helps water move freely through your pump. It’s also an important part to keep your water sparkling clear.

Two primary filter types: A cartridge filter is cylinder-shaped and held in a container at the end of your pump system. These are easy to remove from their container and clean with a high-pressure sprayer. This only works well a few times before having to replace.

“To start the season, I recommend installing a new filter cartridge. They are relatively inexpensive as a single or in a four pack,” Robert said. “When you clean the cartridge, do it often for better results. Or, with these filters, consider installing a new cartridge two to three times a year instead of cleaning. This way, you’ll ensure your filter and pump are working at maximum efficiency.”

The other popular type is the diatomaceous earth filter, sometimes referred to as a “DE filter.” This type of filtration device is really effective but more complex to self-service.

“Diatomaceous filters require less maintenance, but when it’s time for upkeep, it’s best to have a pool technician handle this job,” Robert said. “To do yourself, the filter container needs to be dismantled, thoroughly cleaned from the inside, and then reassembled.”

Keep Up with the Chlorine

This needs more attention at the start of the swimming season and throughout spring.

“All of the pollen in the air this time of year really zaps the chlorine out of your pool,” said Robert. “Rain also dilutes pool chorine levels, so I always keep a close eye on chorine levels during the spring season.”

For do-it yourselfers, Robert recommends adding one gallon of liquid chlorine per 10,000 gallons of pool water and the same ratio for chlorine tablets.

Steady Water Level

This is an easy but sometimes overlooked part of pool maintenance. Proper water levels keep chemicals in balance and help your pump work more efficiently.

Robert says to follow this guide on where to keep your water level: “If you look at the tile from the bottom to the top, the water should be at the halfway point. That’s all it takes. The key is to add water when necessary.”

Have a Pool with A Heater?

Robert suggests turning the unit on at least once per month. The heat keeps bugs and other critters from getting too comfy with your pool heater.

“I’ve seen where the squirrels bring acorns into a heater and build a nest. Once they get settled, they chew on wires and other components causing significant damage.”

These simple steps will go a long way toward getting your pool ready for the first dip of the year and keeping it that way for the rest of the swimming season.
